Discount Pitching Machines
I spent last summer at my aunt’s house in the country. She likes her privacy, so she has a place in the middle of nowhere. At last that’s how it seems to me. I wasn’t too excited about it at first. My parents just told me I had to go and that was that. My cousins had these discount pitching machines and batting equipment though, which made things a lot better. I love baseball. I would play professionally if I could. I’m doing well on the team at my high school, but who knows where that’ll go. I guess I only have to wait a few years to find out.

So, my parents decided to go away for the entire summer. They said it was a second honeymoon. Maybe they deserved it. Most of my friend’s parents aren’t even together anymore. Mine must be doing something right. At first, I was excited about it cause I’d have the entire house to myself. That dream was killed pretty quick. They said that they would be dropping off at my aunt’s place before they left. I told them that I would be leaving for college in another year anyway, so I might as well get a headstart on being on my own. But they didn’t go for that at all.
I didn’t like the idea of being away for the whole summer at first. I like my aunt and all but her place is real country. And I had no idea at the time that my cousins liked baseball as much as I do or had anything like discount pitching machines to play with. I thought we would be staring at the badgers for two months. This is not my idea of fun. I’m used to more of an urban environment where I can at least go for a walk and see more than just trees in the first three miles or less.
But that’s not what we did at all. I got to talking to my cousins pretty early about baseball. They weren’t on the team for their school like I am, but they played a game with their friends all the time. That’s when they first showed me the discount pitching machines they had. They said that they got several discount pitching machines so that they could all use them at the same time. They can’t stand to wait their turns, I guess.
We fired up at least two of those discount pitching machines that night, after dinner. Nothing like some night baseball with robotic pitches coming at you at 90 miles an hour to get the blood pumping. That was good though. It keeps you on your toes. We wound up doing that a lot of the nights while I was there. By the end of summer, I didn’t want to leave. Funny how that worked out. I guess it was a good thing that I got to go there after all. I wish I could go outside with them right now for some batting practice with their discount pitching machines.
